Ferreira was the first producer of port; it was founded by Portuguese wine producers in 1751, when foreign merchants from the north of Europe were already selling wines from Porto.
It was Dona Antonia Adelaïde Ferreira, the great-granddaughter of the founder and a widow at 33 years of age, who devoted all of her energy into building Ferreira. A visionary, she redrew the map of the AOC Porto designation by extensive planting of vines and the promotion of the wine-producing area.
Her determination was not in vain, since Ferreira still has one of the most prestigious vineyards in the Douro region. More than just the number one brand in Portugal, Ferreira is considered by the Portuguese to be part and parcel of the country’s cultural heritage.
